Guinea-BissauThis Landsat 7 image of Guinea-Bissau, a smallcountry in West Africa, shows the complex patterns of the country'sshallow coastal waters, where silt carried by the Geba and other riverswashes out into the Atlantic Ocean.

This is a false-colorcomposite image made using infrared, red and blue wavelengths to bringout details in the silt was taken using Landsat 7's Enhanced ThematicMapper plus (ETM+) sensor on Jan. 12, 2000.

EarthriseThe Apollo 16 crew captured this Earthrise with ahandheld Hasselblad camera during the second revolution of the moon.Identifiable craters seen on the moon include Saha, Wyld and Saenger.Much of the terrain seen here is never visible from the Earth, as thecommand module was passing onto what is known as the 'dark side' of themoon.

Apollo 16 launched on April 16, 1972 and landed on themoon on April 20. The mission was commanded by John Young; Thomas K.Mattingly II was the command module pilot and Charles M. Duke, Jr.served as the lunar module pilot.

Spirit's View Beside 'Home Plate' on Sol 1823NASA's MarsExploration Rover Spirit used its navigation camera to take the imagesthat have been combined into this 180-degree view of the rover'ssurroundings during the 1,823rd Martian day, or sol, of Spirit'ssurface mission (Feb. 17, 2009). The center of the view is toward thesouth-southwest.

The rover had driven 23 feet, or 7 meters,eastward earlier on Sol 1823, part of maneuvering to get Spirit into afavorable position for climbing onto the low plateau called 'HomePlate.' However, after two driving attempts with negligible progressduring the following three sols, the rover team changed its strategyfor getting to destinations south of Home Plate. The team decided todrive Spirit at least partway around Home Plate, instead of ascendingthe northern edge and taking a shorter route across the top of theplateau.

STS-1 LaunchesNearly 30 years ago this week, a new era inspace flight began, when on April 12, 1981 the first shuttle missionwas launched. STS-1 commander John Young had already flown in spacefour times, including a walk on the moon in 1972. Bob Crippen, thepilot, was a Navy test pilot who would go on to command three futureshuttle missions.

Welcome Home, Discovery!Discovery touched down on Runway 15at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, completing the 13-day, 5.3-million milejourney on the STS-119 mission. Discovery delivered the final pair ofpower-generating solar array wings and the S6 truss segment. Themission was the 28th flight to the station, the 36th flight ofDiscovery and the 125th in the Space Shuttle Program, as well as the70th landing at Kennedy.
