Hi Riccardo,
the render plugin needs to implement RCM (our new renderer platform SDK).
Brazil and VRay do this already. Don't know about Flamingo, RhinoMan and
Maxwell, we certainly recommend it to developers.
However, we might add commands to generate the displaced mesh and extract
them outside of a render process.
The displacement has a refinement option, where you can limit the number of
refinement steps and also the contrast threshold. However, it does depend a
bit on the initial mesh-quality, so if you start with a lot of very thin
faces the results might leave someting to be desired.
